A3 document scanners answer two different jobs, and this grid holds both. One half is sheetfed gear that works through a stack of oversized pages unattended. The other half is flatbed, where you place one original at a time and care more about the image than the speed. Work out which one you are buying before you compare a single spec.

On the sheetfed side, read ipm rather than ppm. The Canon imageFORMULA DR6030C is rated 80ppm and 160ipm because a duplex scanner captures both sides in one pass, so images per minute lands at double the page figure. ADF capacity then decides whether someone has to stand at the machine. A 100 sheet feeder suits ad hoc batches, while the 500 sheet feeder on the Ricoh/Fujitsu fi-7900 is built for a bureau. Flatbed and Sheetfed Do Different Jobs

A flatbed earns its place the moment an original will not feed. Bound ledgers, stapled sets, fragile archive material and mounted artwork all have to go on glass. Flatbeds also run much higher optical resolution than production units, and CCD models like the Plustek OpticPro A320E hold depth of field across a page that does not sit perfectly flat. Check the driver before you commit. Most units here ship with a TWAIN driver plus Windows and Mac support, which lets them drop into an existing capture workflow rather than forcing a new one. Worth knowing too that Fujitsu scanners now sell under the Ricoh name, so the same machine turns up in Fujitsu and Ricoh document scanners under both labels.

What is the difference between an A3 and an A4 scanner?

An A3 scanner takes originals up to 297 by 420 millimetres, twice the A4 size. It also tends to carry a larger feeder, a higher daily duty cycle and a sturdier transport, so it copes with mixed batches an A4 unit would jam on.

What does ipm mean on a scanner?

Images per minute counts sides, not sheets. A duplex machine scans front and back in one pass, so the ipm figure is usually double the ppm figure. If your work is double sided, ipm is the number that reflects real throughput.

Can an A3 scanner handle bound books and thick originals?

A flatbed or book edge model can, because the original sits on glass rather than feeding through rollers. A sheetfed unit cannot. If you are digitising bound volumes, filter for flatbed and check the lid design first.

Do document scanners need replacement parts?
