A3 colour laser printers split into two groups here, and that fork matters before you compare anything else. Most of the range is multifunction, so you print, scan and copy at A3 from one chassis. A smaller group is print only, which suits a design or production room that already has scanning covered.

Read the speed rating carefully. The ppm figure on a listing is measured on A4 pages, and A3 sheets take longer through the paper path, so real A3 output usually runs slower than the headline number. Size the machine on volume instead, and treat the recommended monthly volume as around a tenth of the quoted maximum duty cycle.

What is the difference between an A3 and an A4 printer?

An A3 machine prints sheets twice the size of A4, at 297 by 420 millimetres. It also carries larger trays, a higher duty cycle and a heavier build, so it holds up better as a shared workgroup device.

Do A3 printers print A4 as well?

Yes, and usually faster and more cheaply per page than a small desktop machine, because the engine is built for volume. The trays take both sizes, so A4 stays the everyday default and A3 is there when you need it.
